Why Did Your New Hire Fail?

The interview process is intended to help you vet the best candidates, but some people just won’t have what it takes to succeed in your environment. It is shame when this happens, but why does it happen? Almost 50 percent of new hires will fail within the first year of employment. Let’s look at some of the reasons that employees fail and how you can watch for the signs.

  1. They are unable to accept feedback. Not everyone can take criticism. A successful employee needs to be coachable, so if someone doesn’t take feedback well, it may be a red flag. To try to mitigate this risk by asking prospective employees how they handle both positive and negative feedback on the job.
  2. They can’t separate their emotions from their reactions. Everyone has a bad day from time to time, but too many bad days in a row can be an indicator of a much bigger problem. If your employees are too emotional, they may be unable to do their jobs. Try to evaluate their maturity level during the interview process.
  3. They don’t have the right motivation. Sure, each employee will be motivated in different ways, but if what drives an employee is exactly the opposite of your company culture or that of the team around that employee, the situation could become volatile. Try to determine if your potential employee has similar core values to those of your company and the rest of your staff.
  4. They don’t get along with the rest of the staff. Speaking of the rest of the staff, the chemistry between people in the office is crucial. If someone doesn’t get along with others, then productivity will suffer. Look for personality traits that will align with those of other staff in a positive, productive way.
  5. They weren’t given the right tools. Last, all these things may be perfect, but if an employee doesn’t feel like he has the right support from management, he may elect to leave a company. If an employee leaves before his first 90 days are over, it is highly likely he didn’t feel like he would be successful in the organization long term. Make sure you provide all the right tools for success.

What will you do to ensure that your new hires are successful on the job?
